Critical Care at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital
Toledo Children's Hospital provides a full range of intensive care services for pediatric patients, from infants through young adults. The 18-bed, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) provides maximum supervision and support for patients with life-threatening conditions.
A professional team of clinicians utilizes the latest technology to care for critically ill patients and their families. The staff is sensitive to patients' and families' needs and works with them as a team to encourage the healing process.
In addition to the pediatric intensive care unit, Toledo Children's Hospital offers the region's largest Level III newborn intensive care unit (NICU). In-house, board-certified neonatologists (physicians who are trained to care for infants) supervise around the clock, providing comprehensive care to critically ill newborns. The 60-bed single/semiprivate bed NICU is staffed by a full complement of experienced nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, clinical pharmacists, social workers, a neonatal dietitian, and a breastfeeding specialist.
The focus of the NICU is to meet the needs of the entire family. The staff is sensitive to the family and the developmental needs of the infant. NICU staff use a responsive and nurturing approach of developmentally appropriate care, teaming family members and health care professionals to respond to meet each infant's needs.
