Newborns often require specialized care as a result of premature birth, birth defects, or complications during pregnancy, labor or delivery. ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive care to critically ill and high risk newborns while supporting their parents and family.
ProMedica Toledo Children's Hospital is home to the region's largest Level III newborn intensive care unit (NICU). The 60-bed single/semiprivate bed NICU is staffed by a full complement of experienced nurses, neonatologists, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, clinical pharmacists, social workers, a neonatal dietitian, audiologist and lactation specialists.
Our specialists are experts in their field, utilizing the latest technology to treat premature and high risk newborns. Specialists from other areas are available for consultation as needed. These include Pediatric Cardiology, Surgery, Endocrinology, Neurology, Infectious Disease, Genetics, Nephrology, Hematology/Oncology, Pulmonology, Urology, Gastroenterology, and Orthopedics. Additionally, our team recognizes the important role family plays in the care and development of an infant. We use a responsive and nurturing approach of developmentally appropriate care, teaming together family members and health care professionals to meet each infant's unique needs.

This expert team has been recognized at national and international levels, offering the highest-level of neonatal care right here in Toledo.
World Leader in NAVA Technology
ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital was the first hospital in the world to adopt the neurally adjusted ventilator assist (NAVA) system to treat newborns, and we continue to be a leader in its use. This technology that provides synchronized ventilatory support for infants and may help reduce lifelong damage to the lungs.
Support the NICU
ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital Foundation raises funds to support the hospital’s NICU. Donations are used to improve technology and treatment areas and provide support programs for patients and families.
