Kaitlin's Cottage

Kaitlyn’s Cottage is a safe and nurturing country cottage getaway designed to provide short-term and overnight respite for individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities, and their families, located on the Defiance Regional Hospital campus. We currently serve individuals between the ages of 16 and 40, but requests for respite services for children and older adults will considered on a case-by-case basis.

Although the focus of Kaitlyn’s Cottage is to provide services for your loved one with special needs, we also have programming for the families and caregivers. Families are encouraged to participate in activities with their loved one and the rest of the family. And while your loved one is having fun, caregivers can meet with other caregivers for some needed adult time to share information, provide support or just enjoy each other’s company.

If you would like more information on how you can schedule a visit to Kaitlyn’s Cottage, please fill out the Kaitlyn’s Cottage Interest Form.

Social Clubs at Kaitlyn's Cottage

Kaitlyn’s Cottage Clubs provide a consistently scheduled time for participants to join their friends in activities that they find meaningful on a personal level. Current clubs include music club, cooking club, arts & crafts club, and game club, and new suggestions are always welcome.

During a club’s scheduled day and time, the main focus at the cottage will be on the club activities, however, the participants will always have the option to choose any activity while they visit the cottage. If you are interested in programs being offered on other days or at different times, just call us and we will make arrangements to meet your needs. Please pre-register for clubs. The cost is $5.

For scheduled times or to pre-register, contact the Cottage at 419-783-4411.

Visiting Kaitlyn’s Cottage

Once you have made the decision to move forward with planning for respite we can start the intake process, which is required prior to participation in any of our respite services.

As the experts in providing care to their loved one, the caregiver’s guidance allows us to plan in advance for appropriate staffing, programming and services to meet the needs of their loved ones.

For the safety and well-being of all our participants, we will ask you to obtain a variety of information including medical information so we can provide the highest standard of care for your loved one. For example, we will need written verification of medication orders, special dietary restrictions, as well as medical clearance that the individual is appropriate for respite services provided at Kaitlyn’s Cottage. For these important reasons we do not accept walk-ins.

Although many of our staff members have completed medication administration training approval by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, please keep in mind that Kaitlyn’s Cottage is not a nursing facility and will not provide any direct medical care to the guest.

Daytime Respite

We offer a variety of scheduled program times during the week and on the weekends to accommodate varying respite needs. Our programming consists of three hour classes, half-day sessions, as well as some evening and weekend programming. Guests who participate in day and evening program activities will experience everything from sing-a-longs, games, art projects and cooking in our kitchen.

We understand that group activities may not be suitable for all guests and we will match your loved one’s interests and abilities with the appropriate programming. Some guests will require one-to-one supervision while they are with us. We are able to provide this level of care so that these special guests will be able to take part in as much program activity as possible.

Overnight Respite

For scheduled overnight respite, we have four private bedrooms and can accommodate up to four overnight guests at one time. Two rooms have regular beds and two rooms have residential electric beds for those who need additional support. Each bedroom has a color TV and DVD.

Overnight respite stays can be scheduled for a weekday evening or over a weekend, and range from one overnight stay up to one week.

Please contact Kaitlyn’s Cottage directly for more information on the overnight stays.

Volunteering

Our volunteers fill an important function at Kaitlyn’s Cottage. While performing any number of meaningful duties at our facility, volunteers can add fun and vitality to programming, and the much needed support to our staff in the behind the scene. Kaitlyn’s Cottage’s service commitment is to provide safe, fun and compassionate care to everyone we serve. Our volunteer coordinator will strive to match your time, talent and interests with available opportunities.
