DEFIANCE, Ohio, June 15, 2012 – ProMedica will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community open house on Saturday, June 16, from 1-4 p.m., to unveil the region’s first respite center for children and adults with special needs. Kaitlyn’s Cottage, located on the campus of ProMedica Defiance Regional Hospital, is for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities between the ages of 16 – 40. Members of the community are invited to attend Saturday’s event at Defiance Regional Hospital, located at 1200 Ralston Ave. in Defiance.

Kaitlyn’s Cottage provides short-term and overnight respite services for parents and caregivers who need a safe place to leave their loved ones. The new 4,500-square-foot facility offers a home-like environment that includes four private bedrooms, activity rooms and dining facilities. It is staffed by professionals trained to care for individuals with special needs. Participants will receive one-on-one attention and have opportunities to take part in fun and educational group activities.

“We started this journey 12 months ago, armed with a picture of a proposed cottage and a promise to build it,” says Gary Cates, president, Defiance Regional Hospital. “One year later, this community has supported the project with more than million in donations and we are poised to open the doors.”

The center is named after Defiance-resident Kaitlyn Shock. She was born at Defiance Regional Hospital on April 28, 1994. In 2000, she was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder that primarily affects young girls. Children with Rett Syndrome often exhibit autistic-like behaviors in the early stages.

Kaitlyn’s grandparents, Dan and Sharon Farrell, donated million to build the new facility and spearheaded fundraising efforts.

Kaitlyn’s Cottage will officially open on Tuesday, June 26 for day-time respite and on Friday, June 29 for overnight respite stays.
