ProMedica’s Come To The Table Wins Ohio Hospital Association Award

posted on: 05/14/2014

TOLEDO, Ohio, May 14, 2014 – The Ohio Hospital Association (OHA) is honoring ProMedica’s collaborative Come to the Table initiative to address hunger as a health issue with the 2014 Dr. Eli Crew Community Service Excellence Award, formerly called the Meritorious Service Award, the association announced today.

The OHA award recognizes an outstanding healthcare community service initiative which reflects the public interest. The award will be presented during the OHA Recognition Dinner on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, in Columbus.

"We are so honored that our Ohio peers are recognizing ProMedica for our work to end hunger throughout the communities we serve and prevent health problems related to it," said Randy Oostra, ProMedica's president and chief executive officer. “With one in six Americans facing hunger – or nearly one in five in our hometown – the healthcare industry must be involved in solving this problem and addressing other social determinants of health. Hunger, housing and other social determinants often affect our overall health as much as, or even more than, hereditary determinants."

Come to the Table collaborates with community partners, including government and business leaders, to end hunger both in ProMedica's 27-county service area and across the nation.

ProMedica spearheads its own anti-hunger programs – including one to screen patients for hunger and another to repackage unserved food for homeless shelters and other feeding sites – and provides funding for other nonprofit organizations in the region. Plus, ProMedica is championing the cause nationwide by encouraging other healthcare organizations to address hunger as a health issue, and it is holding a series of summits across the country in partnership with the Alliance to End Hunger.

Last year, Come to the Table won the Michigan Health & Hospital Association 2013 Ludwig Community Benefit Award and the 2013 Alliance to End Hunger Partnership Award.

Every year, OHA presents a number of awards recognizing individuals and member hospital and health systems demonstrating excellence in select areas of focus. These achievements have enhanced and brought honor to Ohio hospitals.

The Dr. Eli Crew Community Service Excellence Award is named for the superintendent of Dayton’s Miami Valley Hospital, who was a strong advocate for having an Ohio-based hospital organization. In 1914, Dr. Crew invited Ohio hospital administrators to an organizational meeting at Cedar Point in Sandusky, where OHA was founded.
