Hearing loss can be difficult to recognize and diagnose in infants and small children. That’s why pediatric audiology services are so helpful for children and their parents: they are able to identify problems with hearing and speech even when patients are very young. Autism has become an epidemic—1 in 88 children born today will be diagnosed with autism. While the cause of autism is not known, an early-intervention treatment program will greatly improve the outlook for most young children with autism.
Behavioral Medicine Programs
Emotional wellness is a challenging endeavor for adults, and it can be even more so for children and adolescents. Younger patients have specific needs for behavioral medicine services. Toledo Children's Hospital offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient heart services to infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with pediatric cardiovascular disorders. Undergoing treatment for a serious illness can have a strong emotional impact on a child. The child life program at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital seeks to reduce this impact by helping children understand and cope with their illness, and adjust to the hospital environment. Our child life specialists work as part of the medical team to help children feel as comfortable and secure as possible.
In addition to our trained child life specialists, our team is comprised of art and music therapists, and a certified teacher, who are all focused on your child’s physical, emotional and educational needs.
Children's Safe Harbor Outpatient Services
Children’s Safe Harbor is a collaboration between Toledo Children's Hospital and Harbor Behavioral Healthcare. Through this collaboration, we offer outpatient mental health and behavioral health services for patients ages 6 months – 18 years, including assessment, therapy and medication management.

Chronic Care Connection (formerly known as Project D.O.C.C.) is a medical education program at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital. Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic
It is not uncommon for children to be born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. The conditions are far from life-threatening and can be corrected through surgery or managed through therapy. Critical Care Medicine

Cystic Fibrosis Center of Northwest Ohio
Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plans are vital to living well with cystic fibrosis. CF is a genetic disorder. For children and young adults, it is one of the more common chronic lung diseases. We at the Cystic Fibrosis Center of Northwest Ohio are dedicated to helping our patients handle CF.

Children's Safe Harbor, a behavior and wellness center provided by Toledo Children's Hospital and Harbor Behavioral Healthcare, offers diagnosis and treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, developmental delays (cognitive, language, motor, social), mental retardation, language disorders, and autism spectrum disorders for children up to 18 years of age. Using a team approach, our physicians work with a highly qualified staff to diagnose and provide therapy to children with developmental issues or conditions.

Diabetes Care and Endocrinology
Toledo Children's Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient care for children and adolescents with diabetes. Our endocrinologists also can address and help treat short stature, growth delay or delayed puberty, growth hormone deficiency, thyroid disorders and obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, adrenal disorders, and hormone disorders.

Family Advisory Council
The Family Advisory Council (FAC) is the voice for families at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital. The FAC is a partnership between parents and hospital staff members, promoting the concepts of Patient- and Family-Centered Care and enhancing the delivery of health care. Meetings of the Family Advisory Council are held monthly on the second Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital. The FAC discusses policies and procedures that impact families and facilitates activities that enrich the patient and family experience at the hospital.

General Pediatrics (Inpatient)
Toledo Children's Hospital offers patient- and family-centered acute care for children from birth through 17 years of age. The pediatric unit is staffed by hospitalists, resident physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, respiratory therapists, trained nursing assistants, nutritionists, social workers, child life specialists, and educators. In addition, the staff incorporates family members in the day-to-day care of the patient, which aids in a smooth transition from hospital care to home care.
Genetic tests reveal whether a patient is carrying a gene for a certain disorder. They are performed through an analysis of a small sample of blood or body tissue. Infant Monitor Program
As the parent of a high-risk infant, you know that your child needs expert care. Toledo Children's Hospital provides a diagnostic, therapeutic and educational program to meet the needs of high-risk infants and to help you in the daily monitoring of your child’s health. We use a team approach with parents and families whose infants’ health conditions require the use of home monitoring services. Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation
Certain types of injuries cause physical setbacks, and rehabilitation is frequently required to help patients restore function. Toledo Children’s Hospital offers acute pediatric rehabilitation services for children from birth through age 17. Designated inpatient rooms and a therapy gym provide a pediatric-friendly environment for patients and their families. In addition, children and their families can be served at an acute rehabilitation facility on the campus of Flower Hospital when appropriate.
The multidisciplinary pediatric rehab team includes a pediatric physiatrist (who is board-certified in both pediatrics and physical medicine and rehabilitation); physical, occupational and speech therapists; child life and education specialists; social services; and nursing staff. Their goal is to help your child regain previous levels of independence, as well as to collaborate and partner with the family in your child’s transition to home, outpatient services and school re-entry.
Kids in Safe Seats
Keeping kids safe is a goal the whole community can support. ProMedica Toledo Children's Hospital and the ProMedica Toledo Hospital and the Auxilliary of Toledo Children’s Hospital and Toledo Children's Hospital Auxiliiary fund the Kids in Safe Seats program (K.I.S.S.). Kids in Safe Seats provides parents, guardians and grandparents with a number of services that focus on car seat safety. K.I.S.S. provides participants with the advice of Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, reduced cost car seats, updated car seat safety and recall information, instruction on safe restraint options for children with special health care needs, and education on choosing and properly installing children’s safety seats. Newborn Intensive Care Unit
A responsive and nurturing approach to the care of critically ill newborns: that is what the Toledo Children's Hospital offers in our Level III newborn intensive care unit (NICU). The focus of the NICU is to meet the needs of the entire family. To that end, we are sensitive to the family and the developmental needs of the infant. We help family members and health care professionals work together to meet each infant's needs.
When your child has a neurological disorder or developmental delay, you learn to work with your child and your child’s physician to help manage his or her condition. We at Toledo Children's Hospital provide diagnosis and treatment of nervous system disorders in infants, children and adolescents. A neurological workup can identify disorders such as seizures, headache, neuromuscular disease, and tics. Other disorders that can be diagnosed and evaluated include sleep disturbances, developmental delay, brain tumors, traumatic brain injury, autism, and neurobehavioral disorders. Pain and Pain Management
As much as we’d like to keep our children from feeling pain, as parents, we know that sometimes it is unavoidable. Illnesses happen. Injuries happen. As a parent, you want to do everything you can to minimize your child’s pain when they receive medical treatments, and you want your child’s care providers to do the same. At Toledo Children’s Hospital, we believe that each child has the right to his or her own assessment, prevention and treatment of pain.
The perinatal and pediatric palliative care program at Toledo Children’s Hospital works to enhance quality of life – in partnership with the child, family and health care professionals – by providing physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual support when a life-threatening condition has been diagnosed.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Toledo Children's Hospital provides diagnosis, treatment, management, and coordination of care for children with special physical needs. Pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation can assist with a vast array of diagnoses including cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other nervous system disorders and muscular disorders. The goal of pediatric physiatry is to improve or restore children's functional levels. These functional levels are based on age-appropriate developmental skills including communication skills.
Frequently, children are referred to physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapy for treatment. Please speak with your child’s primary care physician, pediatric therapist or other pediatric specialist for a referral.
If your child has respiratory problems, the staff at Toledo Children’s Hospital can diagnose and treat them. We provide a full spectrum of services for infants and children with acute and chronic lung disorders and complex respiratory disease, as well for ventilator-dependent infants and children. Safe Kids Greater Toledo
Safe Kids Greater Toledo is a community-based initiative of Safe Kids Worldwide, focused on the prevention of unintentional childhood injuries through public education, community programming, safety product distribution, legislation, and media outreach. When given to premature and fragile babies monthly for six months, Synagis substantially reduces the risk of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the most common cause of infant readmissions to the hospital. Toledo Children's Hospital Emergency Center provides coordinated services so that injured children receive optimal care from the time of injury until discharge, including rehabilitation. Though its effects are often not visible, emotional trauma can impact the well-being of a child just as much as physical trauma does. For children, teens, and families who have experienced any type of traumatic event, Toledo Children’s Hospital provides a unique service called The Cullen Center. A member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, the Cullen center offers counseling and group support.
