Through the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program, ProMedica is proud to offer a progressive approach to care at Toledo and Flower Hospitals. Our use of safe and effective medical and surgical techniques reduces the many risks that are associated with blood transfusions and minimizes the need for blood transfusions.
Our goals include improving patient outcomes, respecting the needs of patients for whom blood transfusion is not an option or a choice, and educating others on how patient blood management can improve medical and surgical outcomes for all healthcare consumers.
Since its inception in 1993, the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program at Flower Hospital established itself as the leader in bloodless care in our area. Toledo Hospital joined the program in 2001 and in 2011 we developed a Pre-Op Anemia Program for Orthopedic patients with the goal to expand this to other elective surgeries.
Physicians from every discipline have been trained and practice bloodless medicine and surgery at Flower or Toledo Hospitals. Thousands of patients from northwest Ohio, southeast Michigan and beyond have received medical treatment and undergone highly complex procedures such as open-heart, orthopedic and gastrointestinal surgeries without blood transfusions.
