About the Program
For some people who suffer from severe obesity, diets and medications have not led to long-term success in weight loss. Yet, long-term weight loss is the only way to avoid the health consequences of obesity, which often include diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and heart dysfunction. For people who have tried behavioral and dietary interventions but have not been able to lose a significant amount of weight, bariatric surgery can be the key to achieving long-term weight loss.
As a patient of the ProMedica Toledo Hospital Metabolic and Bariatric Center, we want you to understand bariatric surgery and feel confident in your choice. That’s why our program is comprehensive: it’s not just about the surgery; it’s about being there for you every step of the way. We provide our patients with educational materials to read and informational seminars to attend. We offer psychological, nutritional and physical therapy counseling to our patients. Before and after surgery, our patients attend monthly support groups. We can even help you with insurance pre-authorization to make the whole process go more smoothly.
As our patient, we want you to know that you're in good hands. Led by board-certified medical director Patrick White, MD, FACS, our team of nurses, physician assistants, dietitians, social workers, physical therapists, and patient educators offers a comprehensive, supportive pre- and post-surgery program for our patients. The program has been in continuous operation for more than six years. During that time, we have provided expert, compassionate care to many people throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

Our stories are about people who have won their battle with obesity. Listen to how they tried countless diets and exercise programs, developed life-threatening illnesses, and lived with the physical and emotional pain of obesity. Most importantly, listen to how weight loss surgery has transformed their lives.
Surgical Benefits and Risks
The American Heart Association states that bariatric surgery is a relatively safe procedure that can lead to long-term weight loss and significantly improved health. For individuals who are safe surgical candidates, bariatric surgery can aid weight reduction and thus greatly reduce an individual’s risk for cardiac disease and other major health problems. However, any surgery carries with it risks to consider as well. We want our patients to feel confident in their decision by knowing about all the potential benefits and risks of bariatric surgery.
From informational seminars to support groups, our program provides many avenues for patients to stay educated and empowered.
