ProMedica Toledo Children’s Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for its asthma disease management program by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. The certification award recognizes Toledo Children’s Hospital’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.
In achieving Joint Commission certification, Toledo Children’s Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for pediatric patients with asthma.
One of the major challenges of living with asthma is learning how to recognize and manage symptoms at home. For children with asthma, having adult care givers, guardians, and family members who are educated about asthma is tremendously beneficial. Toledo Children's Hospital offers education for the overall care of children with asthma. Children and their parents/guardians, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other caregivers are welcome to participate in a two-hour course that teaches participants about:
- the respiratory system
- what makes asthma airways different from unaffected airways
- what causes – or “triggers” – asthma attacks
- symptoms of an asthma attack
- medications used to prevent asthma attacks (controllers)
- medications used to treat asthma attacks (quick-relief)
- monitoring asthma signs and symptoms
- when to call a physician
